A removable bottom on a square pan solves the same problem it solves on a tart pan. You can lift the base up and slide the baked good out without running a knife around the edges and risking breaking what you just baked.
At 6 inches it is the right size for a half batch of brownies, a small cheesecake, or layered bar cookies that need clean edges when you cut them.
